Words in Review . . . Kevin Maynor | Fleur de Son Home Kevin Maynor: Paul Robeson Remembered
"In the decade or so that I've been reviewing for Fanfare, I
have never been so impressed by a debut recital disc as I have with Kevin Maynor's stunning tribute to Paul Robeson. This is a "super" voice - a voice to compare not only to
Robeson but also to Alexander Kipnis, to Boris Christoff, even to Ezio Pinza - in other words, the very greatest bass voices of the century. I cannot say enough about the talent
displayed on this disc. The sound recording is superb. Don't miss this one.
"This disc is a splendid idea, especially since Kevin
Maynor's rich bass voice is remarkably reminiscent of the timbre of Paul Robeson. Maynor not only has a lovely voice and solid technical and vocal production skills, but he has
strong musical instincts as well. His ability to sing softly without losing tonal body is unique (the second verse of Jacob's Ladder is really gorgeous). Curly Headed baby is so
beautiful it might be worth the disc alone. The recorded sound is very fine - warm, air around the voice and clear. There is certainly much to admire here."- Fanfare |
